Surfing the Net safely @ Hillingdon Libraries
Using the Internet can be fun and can help with your homework, hobbies and learning, but it is really important to surf the Net safely.
Hillingdon Libraries actively encourage you to use the Internet and have fun, but please remember the following:
- You must seek your parent's permission before using the Internet.
- If you are under 8 years old you may only use the Children's PCs.
- If you are 8 - 14 years old you may use either the Children's or the Adult PCs.
- We do not have control over the content of material available on the Internet.
- If you are found using the Internet or computer equipment inappropriately, your session will be cancelled and you may be prevented from using the PCs in the future.
- Our friendly staff can provide information on how to use the Internet safely and advice on useful websites.
We suggest that, for your own safety, you should:
- NEVER give your name, address, mobile number, school name or any other information that could be used to identify you. You do not know who will see your details - they could be someone else your age but they could also be an adult who is trying to trick you or hurt you.
- NEVER reveal credit card details or order anything online.
- Whenever using email, instant messaging, chat facilities, message boards and similar services:
- always use a nickname;
- never include your picture - use clipart or emoticons instead;
- never give your password to anyone (not even your best friend);
- when logging in, make sure the PC will not remember your username or password;
- when you've finished, make sure you LOG OUT properly before you close the program to ensure that no one else can use the service pretending to be you (note that just closing the program does not necessary log you out);
- tell your parents or a member of library staff if you come across any website that is upsetting or that makes you feel uncormfortable.
- NEVER agree to meeting anyone you have met on the Internet - it can be very dangerous. Only do so with your parent's permission and only when they can be present.
- Ignore nasty, rude or suggestive e-mails and tell your parents or a member of library staff so they can contact the service provider.
- Don't visits sites that say they are for adults only.
- Use websites recommended by library staff.
